Teachers should also use visuals, videos, or modeling during priming, when possible. This could be done as a whole class or during an activity such as âmorning meeting,â but teachers should keep a close eye on children with ASD, in case they need additional support. See textbox 4.1 for a few simple steps teachers can follow during the priming session.
Textbox 4.1. Steps for implementing a priming session
Review the activities that the class will be completing during the physical activity program that day (or the next day, if you choose to do this at the end of the school day). Refer to the visual schedule for the program.
Check to see if students have any questions as you discuss each activity. Try to help them understand what is expected to perform selected motor and social skills. Use modeling and guided practice to support these skills.
Review a Social Story or script that targets appropriate behaviors to use during the physical activity program.
Check to see if children can repeat back what you will be doing that day, and what motor or social skills they should be focusing on.
Repeat steps if necessary.
